Many years ago, one of my very first teaching experiences was a house portrait workshop. The “house shape” is one of my favorites and that combined with the nostalgia and sentimental attachment to a home is just so dreamy to breathe life into. I’m bringing this workshop back and leaning into people-made structures in addition to the traditional home. Think folk inspired architecture, Appalachian barns, in addition to homes!

We’ll start with a favorite picture of a structure, whether it's a house you know, an antique barn, or a sketch playing with angles and lines, and build a layered portrait using paper, paint, and found materials like veneer and sand paper. Rather than striving for perfect architectural accuracy, you'll learn to capture the spirit of a place. I’ll share my favorite techniques for creating textures, expressive details, and unexpected combinations that make each house feel unique.

This is a project based workshop! We will start a single project and work towards a finished result through the weeks of the workshop.
